Deleting your Council account

You can delete your Council account at any time, from the app, from the website, or by writing to us. It's free, and nobody will try to talk you out of it.
How to delete it
- In the Council app (Android or iPhone): open the Menu, then Profile, then Delete my account.
- On the website: sign in at councilwhat.com, open the Menu, then Profile, then Delete my account.
- If you can't sign in: email support@councilwhat.com from the address on your account, and ask us to delete it. We'll delete it and write back to say it's done.
Council emails you a link to confirm (when it can send email), so nobody else can delete your account. Once you confirm, it's done.
What's deleted
Your account and everything linked to it: your profile and username, your date of birth, your faith and experience if you set them, your questions, answers and replies, the stories still linked to you, your anonymous inbox and the messages in it, what you kept (Sitting with, bookmarks, highlights, collections), your Helpful votes, your notification settings and your sign-ins. If you signed in with Apple, we also ask Apple to remove Council from your Apple ID.
What isn't, and for how long
- Council's automatic backups still hold a copy until they're replaced, within about a week.
- Payment records stay as long as the law requires for accounts and tax, without saying whose they were.
- Stories whose link to you was already erased (10 minutes after posting, or 3 days with your name on them) can't be found as yours any more, so they stay up, anonymous. Delete them first from the device you posted them on, which holds their delete key.
- Something removed for breaking the rules may be kept as long as the law requires or allows for dealing with it.
Deleting what you wrote, but keeping your account
Delete everything I've written (in the Menu, or in Profile) erases every question, answer and story of yours that can still be linked to you, and keeps your account.
